Why I Decided to Run for Governor
My conservative political views have been shaped primarily because of my relationship with my father, the inspiring can-do attitude of Ronald Reagan, and the truths espoused in our nation's founding document, the Declaration of Independence. I believe, as they did, in absolute views, which support limited government and the belief that we all have God-given rights of life, liberty, and property ownership.
My conservative voting record, while serving in the State Senate for the last seven years, proves I believe what I say. Indeed, we can improve on the things that are troubling this country and our state simply by returning to our founding principles of limited government, individual liberty, moral responsibility, and most of all the expansion of freedom.
These are the values on which I make my political decisions. There are times I am called upon to stand alone, but I stand on principles that I believe in; and, in reality, I'm not standing alone because there are millions of Oklahomans who believe as I do. They are looking for a Governor who will unite with the people on Constitutional issues and then govern accordingly.
If the status quo of government expansion and intervention is expected from my policies, you will be sorely disappointed. My administration will be guided by efficient government reform, lower taxes, and an overall structure that empowers the people and limits the politicians. I realize that bureaucrats and elected officials shun my policy changes, but the vast majority of Oklahomans appreciate my reform.
My family is my pride and joy. I grew up in a blue-collar home with a loving mom and wonderful dad who was one of the most honorable, hard working men I have ever known. Mom stayed at home with the four kids while dad worked as a pipe fitter and air conditioning mechanic. In my senior year in high school I loaned dad $500 and my 1963 Chevy so he could start our family business. I was fortunate to spend 17 years working side by side with my late father building our family business. I married my high school sweetheart and have been married for 37 years; we have two sons and one daughter-n-law.
The most influential aspect in my life is my faith and my personal relationship with Christ. I have been a Christian for most of my life; as a matter of fact, I can't remember a time when my family did not attend church. Donna and I are active in our church having served as Sunday school teachers and as a member of the deacon board. We have attended Woodlake Assembly of God for almost 40 years. There is nothing more important to me than my walk with Christ; it defines who I am.
Again, I believe leadership matters. Imagine the Governor's office and the State Legislature filled with elected officials who are dedicated to serve. No longer would we have lobbyists and special interest groups dictating public policy. Instead there would be public servants dedicated to serving the people and desirous to govern with truth. If we elect a Governor who will lead on Constitutional principles, then I believe Oklahoma is in store for enormous growth and prosperity for many years to come. I also know I am someone you can believe in and someone who is dedicated to principled Constitutional leadership. I would be honored to have the opportunity to serve as your next governor in 2010.
